A town born
in the 20th century on the central-eastern coast of Sardinia.
Cardedu is
the youngest municipality in Ogliastra and its original nucleus is composed of
some families from Gairo, who were
forced to abandon their homes after a violent flood in the mid-20th century.
The centre
is of recent formation, but the population has a millenary cultural heritage,
which has its origins in Gairo Vecchio
and manifests itself in local know-how, popular traditions and religious
celebrations.
To the
Neolithic period belong the domus de Janas of Monte Arista, the domus de Janas
of Cucuddadas and the menhirs of
Costa Iba. The best-attested phase is the Nuragic, as the village has four
nuraghi, including the nuraghe Perda 'e
pera, and an imposing sacred well su
Presoneddu, still intact.
The sandy
coastline is almost five kilometres long: in the Marina di Cardedu there are
the beaches
of Foddini, Tramalitza, Museddu and Perd'e Pera.
