Cala Biriola

In the Baunei area, halfway between other marvellous paradises on the Ogliastra coast and close to Grotta del Fico and Cala Sisine, lies Cala Biriola. The delightful little beach of rounded white pebbles, protected by the limestone cliff that describes an arc of more than two kilometres, opens out at the end of the enchanting grove of the same name, made up of centuries-old holm oaks, junipers clinging to the rock and Mediterranean scrub. It is framed by a rocky arch above the water against which the waves break, completing the unforgettable living picture. The extremely clear water, rich in fish, makes it suitable for scuba diving or swimming with mask and snorkel. You will reach Cala Biriola through a long and demanding trekking among the Supramonte mountains, starting from the Golgo di Baunei, with some climbing stretches, to be walked with the assistance of expert guides, appropriate equipment and plenty of water. Here shepherds and charcoal burners, protagonists of the main activities of the past, have left numerous traces: ladders, footbridges of twisted logs and iron guides to facilitate the passage of men and animals to the sea and the embarkation of coal on barges.
